Prevention is considered a cornerstone of cancer control worldwide and it is crucial to the Partnership's overall strategy.
Certain cancer-causing agents occur in the environment where we live, while others are tied to lifestyle choices we make or other factors. Prevention takes place on many levels. Our work includes helping to build a stronger evidence base to support prevention initiatives.
As well, there is recognition of the role of common risk factors with other diseases. Diabetes and heart disease, for example, are tied to cancer risk factors such as poor nutrition, smoking, alcohol consumption and lack of physical activity. Working relationships and partnerships with other disease groups will maximize the impact of our work on the overall health of Canadians.
Cancer control knowledge and expertise are widely dispersed throughout Canada’s health-care system. To draw on this experience and knowledge and make it readily accessible to all stakeholders, the Partnership is advised by collaborative networks of volunteer experts, including patients and survivors and family members. These are our Advisory Groups.
The goal of the Primary Prevention Advisory Group is to provide advice on the development, implementation and evaluation of a targeted action plan to advance cancer and chronic disease prevention research, practice and policy in Canada. In addition, subcommittees of the Advisory Group focused on knowledge exchange, policy and evaluation will further advise on the research-to-action agenda for comprehensive primary prevention.
Partnership Advisory Groups (formerly called Action Groups) are undergoing a membership renewal process which is to be completed by April 1, 2010. For more information about Advisory Groups please contact info@partnershipagainstcancer.ca.
