Guiding principles of engagement

Our work is grounded in guidance from First Nations, Inuit and Métis collaborators

The following principles and governance structures reflect relationships that have been built over time, and with care. These Principles of Engagement were co-developed with First Nations, Inuit and Métis Advisors, Elders and partners and continue to guide how we show up in this work with accountability, humility and respect.

Principles for working with First Nations, Inuit and Métis:

  • Lead to action
    • Move from listening to making meaningful, community-driven change.
  • Reflect diverse experiences
    • Include stories and perspectives from First Nations, Inuit and Métis.
  • Ensure Peoples-specific representation
    • Include First Nations, Inuit and Métis voices in all aspects of the work.
  • Respect and reflect culture
    • Make First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures visible throughout the process and outcomes.
  • Honour protocols
    • Follow Peoples-specific ways of working and decision-making.
  • Be rooted in reconciliation
    • Work with care, trust, accountability and long-term commitment.
  • Recognize many ways of knowing
    • Engage through oral traditions, lived experience and other knowledge systems.

Governance

The Partnership’s governance structure includes First Nations, Inuit and Métis Advisors and one position on the Partnership’s Board of Directors is held for an Indigenous Board Member at-large. The position rotates between a First Nations, Inuit and Métis representative.

The inclusion of First Nations, Inuit and Métis advisory roles was established following recommendations from the National Indigenous Organization Caucus, a former body within the Partnership that included representatives from the Assembly of First Nations, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Métis National Council.

Together, the advisors and Indigenous Board Members at-large provide advice and guidance to the work of the Partnership. Learn about the Partnership’s current First Nations, Inuit and Metis Advisors and Board of Directors.
