Surveillance is the collection and analysis of data to monitor changes in cancer patterns, such as the number of new cases, prevalence and survival rates. Establishing a coordinated cancer surveillance system, including connecting the many areas where information resides, will facilitate comparisons and enable accurate conclusions.
Collaboration with the provinces and territories, and other national organizations, is bringing together nationwide cancer data and information. A key area is enhancing the collection of staging data, an indicator of the severity of a patient’s disease at diagnosis. This data will be used to help partners plan cohesive action in prevention, screening, health-care delivery and policy.
Cancer control knowledge and expertise are widely dispersed throughout Canada’s health-care system. To draw on this experience and knowledge and make it readily accessible to all stakeholders, the Partnership is advised by collaborative networks of volunteer experts, including patients and survivors and family members. These are our Advisory Groups.
The Surveillance Advisory Group has a mandate to establish an enhanced national cancer surveillance system that improves cancer control by leading the coordinated planning, development and implementation of Canadian cancer surveillance initiatives in information collection, analysis, communication and application of results. The vision of the Surveillance Advisory Group is to coordinate the development of a high quality cancer surveillance system in Canada that brings together cancer epidemiological data and cancer control information from the provinces and territories to facilitate effective planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Canadian cancer control efforts.
Partnership Advisory Groups (formerly called Action Groups) are undergoing a membership renewal process which is to be completed by April 1, 2010. For more information about Advisory Groups please contact info@partnershipagainstcancer.ca.
