Screening
April 2012 marks the beginning of the Partnership’s second five-year mandate and the next phase of implementing Canada’s national cancer strategy. The priorities and initiatives for the next five years are outlined in our 2012-2017 strategic plan, Sustaining Action Toward a Shared Vision. Our website will soon be updated to reflect the activities supporting the strategic plan. The information below reflects the priorities and accomplishments of our work between 2007 and 2012.
Early detection to save lives
Cancer is the leading cause of early death in Canada.1 The Partnership is spearheading efforts in screening where there is known benefit, such as population-based approaches for both colorectal and cervical cancers. An alliance created to represent all population-based screening programs — for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer — is also maximizing impact through joint operational strategies. Through a related initiative in anticipatory science, Partnership-sponsored panels of experts are addressing new evidence in cancer screening as it emerges.
These efforts will continue to address gaps as the Partnership works to accelerate screening program activity, the sharing of knowledge and quality improvements in cancer control.
Initiatives
The following multifaceted projects are either boosting population-based screening when it is known to reduce cancer or helping to determine how emerging evidence can optimize cancer screening in general.
- The Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative
- The Pan-Canadian Cervical Screening Initiative
- The Anticipatory Science Initiative
