Standards for the Delivery of Ambulatory Chemotherapy

Standards for the Delivery of Ambulatory Chemotherapy

April 2012 marks the beginning of the Partnership’s second five-year mandate and the next phase of implementing Canada’s national cancer strategy. The priorities and initiatives for the next five years are outlined in our 2012-2017 strategic plan, Sustaining Action Toward a Shared Vision. Our website will soon be updated to reflect the activities supporting the strategic plan. The information below reflects the priorities and accomplishments of our work between 2007 and 2012.

Contributing to the safe delivery of outpatient chemotherapy

The Partnership, Accreditation Canada, the Canadian Association of Provincial Cancer Agencies and front-line service providers are working  together to develop and implement a set of standards that will contribute to the safe delivery of outpatient chemotherapy across the country.

Progress to date

  • An Advisory Committee with representation across disciplines and jurisdictions developed a comprehensive set of ambulatory systemic cancer therapy standards that were piloted at four locations across Canada.
  • Broad, web-based stakeholder engagement sessions were held to seek feedback on these standards. The resulting responses and suggested changes informed adjustments that will ensure the feasibility of using the standards in a clinical setting and will inform development of evaluation criteria for the implementation of the standards in the accreditation process.
  • An implementation strategy has been developed to support the cancer control community with rollout of the standards in September 2011, during Accreditation Canada’s annual release of new standards.
