April 2012 marks the beginning of the Partnership’s second five-year mandate and the next phase of implementing Canada’s national cancer strategy. The priorities and initiatives for the next five years are outlined in our 2012-2017 strategic plan, Sustaining Action Toward a Shared Vision. Our website will soon be updated to reflect the activities supporting the strategic plan. The information below reflects the priorities and accomplishments of our work between 2007 and 2012.

Serving the cancer information needs of Canadians

A pan-Canadian knowledge hub and online community, cancerview.ca offers trusted evidence-based content from more than 30 cancer and health partner organizations in Canada. The online resource is designed to serve the needs of Canadians seeking high-quality information and tools about cancer. It is a gateway to directories and repositories covering key topics in cancer, specialized tools and resources, services and links to partner sites. It is also a primary source of tools and resources developed by the Partnership. In addition, cancerview.ca connects and enables work across Canada through its free virtual online collaboration community.

Progress to date

  • The Partnership has developed several resources in collaboration with its partners, such as:
  • The Partnership also supports resources that have a more pan-Canadian reach and profile. The Canadian Virtual Hospice is one such gem.
  • Seven searchable knowledge databases were created and launched, including a directory of Canadian policies and legislation for the prevention of cancer and chronic diseases, a database of online peer and professional services to support patients and caregivers, and a repository of innovative health human resource models that addresses opportunities to improve delivery of cancer services. Capturing and retaining information this way makes it available in a format that can be used again and again.
  • Over 30 cancer and health partner organizations in Canada provide content to cancerview.ca. Visitors may access information from trusted sources in Canada and beyond through a single search tool, as well as a monthly e-Bulletin that includes partner news, events, awards and funding opportunities. The number of partners continues to grow, expanding the cancerview.ca family.
  • Nearly 160 groups from across the country are using the virtual collaboration space on cancerview.ca to support activity in every province and territory, often through cross-provincial and territorial work.
  • The pan-Canadian Oncology Drug Review (pCODR) signed on as the first white-label partner of cancerview.ca, using the portal platform for its public presence and to enable electronic submissions by manufacturers and tumour groups for review.
  • To share key knowledge about current data, trends and emerging cancer control issues with health-care professionals, the Partnership produces Cancer Control Snapshots and Cancer Control Spotlights.
    • Cancer Control Snapshots synthesize available information in an accessible, concise format. They are disseminated through existing partner networks, the Partnership’s e-Bulletin and outreach to key stakeholders and partners. To widen distribution, the Partnership worked with the Canadian Medical Association to distribute an issue of the Snapshots as an insert in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Approximately 73,000 physicians received the mailing.
    • Released in May 2010, Cancer Control Spotlight: Colorectal Cancer Screening was distributed in partnership with the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology. Developed for health-care professionals with an investment in colorectal cancer, the long-form newsletter provides a full analysis of progress in increasing the uptake of colorectal screening in Canada.
