Health Human Resources

April 2012 marks the beginning of the Partnership’s second five-year mandate and the next phase of implementing Canada’s national cancer strategy. The priorities and initiatives for the next five years are outlined in our 2012-2017 strategic plan, Sustaining Action Toward a Shared Vision. Our website will soon be updated to reflect the activities supporting the strategic plan. The information below reflects the priorities and accomplishments of our work between 2007 and 2012.

Inspiring innovative workforce solutions

The cancer workforce faces a number of pressures, including a growing need for services, greater complexity of care and a diversity of health service delivery models that can hinder the sharing of best practices.

To address challenges such as staff recruitment, training, deployment and retention, the Partnership supports increased awareness of the innovative models being used across Canada to enhance patient care.

Achievements

Toward a vision of enabling quality care to patients, the Partnership successfully completed a significant project that will help build and sustain capacity in Health Human Resources in jurisdictions across the country. The Service Delivery Models Initiative collected and examined Canadian and international models that deliver care efficiently, effectively and in sustainable ways. This resource aims to share knowledge that will inspire and inform experts involved in planning the optimal delivery of cancer services.

  • Central to this strategic initiative was the creation of a searchable database to share 120 Canadian and international models of proven, innovative workforce management solutions. Users may connect with teams using these models and explore how such models may be applied in other jurisdictions. This dynamic repository for identifying and learning from innovative models of service delivery is housed on cancerview.ca
  • Supporting the online repository, the Health Human Resources Workforce Symposium was held in January 2010 to foster collaboration and the exchange of ideas on optimizing human resources in cancer control. The first symposium of its kind in Canada, Inspiring Innovation through Service Delivery: Optimizing the Cancer Workforce brought together over 150 delegates from across the country, representing all aspects of cancer control. Symposium presentations and other materials can be found on the Health Human Resources section of  cancerview.ca.
