The patient voice: Promoting a patient-centred perspective

The patient voice: Promoting a patient-centred perspective

April 2012 marks the beginning of the Partnership’s second five-year mandate and the next phase of implementing Canada’s national cancer strategy. The priorities and initiatives for the next five years are outlined in our 2012-2017 strategic plan, Sustaining Action Toward a Shared Vision. Our website will soon be updated to reflect the activities supporting the strategic plan. The information below reflects the priorities and accomplishments of our work between 2007 and 2012.

In a cancer system that is often “tumour-focused,” reflecting the voices of Canada’s patients, families and survivors in the Partnership’s work is paramount. Their personal experiences help ensure our efforts to advance cancer control are tangible and meaningful.

To that end, the Partnership works closely with patients, families and survivors through charitable organizations, patient advocacy groups and the Canadian Cancer Action Network (CCAN), a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to ensuring patient interests remain a key priority on the national cancer agenda. CCAN’s members provide input on key Partnership initiatives, such as cancer research priorities and survivorship activities, often through CCAN-appointed representation on our various advisory mechanisms or through broader consultation. In turn, the Partnership looks to CCAN members to further disseminate information about the Partnership’s collaborative work through their own organizational networks.

By leveraging its broad membership, CCAN also helps to identify and address areas of common concern among those most directly affected by the disease. For example, a day-long symposium, hosted by CCAN in partnership with the Public Policy Forum and the Canadian Cancer Society, was held in Ottawa in September 2009, to discuss ways to improve Canadians’ access to cancer drugs.

In addition to our work with CCAN, the input of patients, families and survivors is encouraged through the Partnership’s various advisory mechanisms. To ensure a transparent and inclusive process, calls for participation are publicized through online postings.
