Structured report projects in five provinces

National consensus on synoptic reporting is needed, says Lee Fairclough

Development of a national consensus on the standards and content for structured report checklists, or synoptic reports, is a priority project for the Partnership, says Lee Fairclough, VP of Knowledge Management. The Partnership is working with partnering organizations on a number of fronts.

Pathology project:

The project goal is to capture data that are required for optimal cancer staging information. This includes working with the Canadian Association of Pathologists to support:

  • Adoption of templates from the College of American Pathologists as national content standards;
  • Working with the provinces to expand use of templates.

Surgery project:

  • Is based on cancer surgery templates developed by Alberta Health Services;
  • Includes report templates on cancer surgeries of the colon, rectum, breast, ovary and head and neck;
  • Implements templates using WebSMR in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.

Other project goals include evaluating:

  • Feasibility of a synoptic system;
  • Working collaboratively with Canada Health Infoway and the Canadian Institute for Health Information;
  • Acceptability to users;
  • Feasibility of and opportunities for data-sharing.
