CAN-ADAPTE/CAN-IMPLEMENT
April 2012 marks the beginning of the Partnership’s second five-year mandate and the next phase of implementing Canada’s national cancer strategy. The priorities and initiatives for the next five years are outlined in our 2012-2017 strategic plan, Sustaining Action Toward a Shared Vision. Our website will soon be updated to reflect the activities supporting the strategic plan. The information below reflects the priorities and accomplishments of our work between 2007 and 2012.
Supporting implementation of cancer guidelines locally
CAN-ADAPTE is creating a standardized process and set of resources to support cancer experts in implementing cancer control guidelines. The initiative provides guidance for adapting evidence to local contexts and to the level of resources available in a given jurisdiction.
CAN-IMPLEMENT offers a guide that includes general information on evidence-informed practice, guideline development and implementation; a library science supplement, which includes more information about searching for and screening scientific literature; and a toolkit, which provides a number of support materials for adapting guidelines. By building on existing guidelines, CAN-IMPLEMENT makes it possible to extend the reach of existing cancer control guidelines and improves the quality and efficiency of the guideline development process while reducing duplication of effort. CAN-IMPLEMENT is a resource developed by the Canadian Guideline Adaptation Study Group, an initiative of the Partnership’s Cancer Guidelines Advisory Group.
Progress to date
- First published in April 2010, the CAN-IMPLEMENT Guideline Adaptation and Implementation Planning Resource was designed to fill an acknowledged gap in tools for guideline adaptation and implementation.
- A second version of CAN-IMPLEMENT has been developed to expand the resource. As part of this process, the Partnership’s Guideline Advisory Group is following and supporting study cases from both CancerCare Manitoba and COSTaRS (pan-Canadian Oncology Symptom Triage and Remote Support), which is a collaboration that focuses on addressing variability in how remote support is offered across Canada and the degree to which it is based on evidence. CancerCare Manitoba and COSTaRS are working through the guideline adaptation and implementation process. The CAN-ADAPTE team is evaluating its experiences to share learnings and further update CAN-IMPLEMENT resources and tools.
