New CIO for Cancer Care Ontario

Cancer Care Ontario has appointed Rick Skinnerexternal link as vice-president and chief information officer, effective May 19, 2009.

Mr. Skinner is a health-care information technology executive with more than 25 years' experience in health information systems.

Goodhand appointed chair of isotope review panel

As announced on June 19 by Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Cancer Society president and CEO Peter Goodhandexternal link has been appointed chair of the federal government's Expert Review Panel on Isotope Production. The panel has been convened to assess options from the private and public sectors to secure a reliable isotope supply for Canada for the medium and long terms. A final report is expected Nov. 30, 2009.

New chair for eHealth Ontario

Rita Burak external linkhas been appointed Chair of eHealth Ontario's board of directors. Ms. Burak has held senior positions in the Ontario government, including as secretary of the cabinet and clerk of the executive council, and deputy minister of agriculture, food and rural affairs. The appointment took effect on June 18, 2009.

CIHR joins global initiative against chronic diseases

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research has become a charter member in a collaborative global initiative to battle chronic disease, including cardiovascular disease, several cancers, chronic respiratory conditions and type 2 diabetes. The CIHR has joined five other leading health research agencies in launching the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases external link on June 15. The Alliance will hold its inaugural scientific meetings in November 2009.

Queen's University cancer researcher recognized

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research has recognized the mentoring work of     Dr. Bruce Elliott external linkfrom the Cancer Research Institute at Queen’s University and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital. Dr. Elliott received the 2009 Synapse Mentorship Award in the category of Individual Researcher for his direct scientific contributions to young people.

Ontario grants for drug innovation

The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has announced requests for letters of intent for potential research grants for the 2009/2010 review cycle of the Drug Innovation Fundexternal link.
 
The Fund makes available $5 million annually to provide Ontario researchers with stable, long-term funding to perform systems outcomes research and to evaluate the value of medicines in improving health outcomes. Deadline for submissions is July 3, 2009.

Research award to fund Canadian e-Health observatory

The first recipient of the Applied Health Services and Policy Chair awardexternal link in e-Health is Dr. Francis Lau, University of Victoria.

Announced on May 20, 2009, the award is jointly funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (CIHR-IHSPR) and Canada Health Infoway. Over the next five years, the $925,000 award will help develop an e-Health observatory to monitor the effects of health information system deployment in Canada.

CIHR's Beaudet awarded BRIO

Dr. Alain Beaudet, president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, has received a BRIO awardexternal link from BIOQuebec, a biotechnology and life science industry association, in recognition of his role in the growth of Quebec's life sciences industry.

The award was made at BIOQuebec's 2009 Genesis Awards Gala on May 14, 2009.

Manitoba recognized for work to prevent chronic diseases

Manitoba has won a Tommy Douglas Celebration of Medicare Award for a program that supports communities as they develop programs to address chronic disease risk factors. The national award was presented to Manitoba's Chronic Disease Prevention Initiative on June 4, 2009, in Toronto.

At the same time, the government launched two ministerial provincial awardsexternal link — the Enid Thompson Award for Health Care Innovation and the Mino Bimaadiziwin Innovation Award for Healthy Living — that will recognize local initiatives that foster innovation in health care and healthy living. Nominations will be accepted until July 31.

Yukoners weigh in on health care

On May 14, 2009, Yukon Health and Social Services tabled a preliminary report summarizing Yukoners' opinions on recommendations for the current and long-term sustainability of the territory’s health-care system. Those 43 recommendationsexternal links were made in September 2008 following a commissioned health-care review.

BC mammography educational forum

Hosted by the Screening Mammography Program of B.C., the 2009 Screening Mammography Educational Forumexternal link will be held on Oct. 24, 2009, in Vancouver. The forum is aimed at affiliated radiologists, mammography technologists and other interested medical professionals and researchers.

Patient forum on lymphoma

The Lymphoma Research Foundation and Lymphoma Foundation Canada is hosting the North American Patient Educational Forum on Lymphomaexternal link, Oct. 23-25, 2009, in New York City. The program is designed to provide people who have lymphoma, and their loved ones, with information about treatment options, patient support issues and the latest in lymphoma research.

Cutaneous lymphoma patient education

The Cutaneous Lymphoma Foundation will hold a Cutaneous Lymphoma Patient Education Forumexternal link in New York City, Oct. 9-11, 2009.

International chronic disease conference set

The third international chronic disease conference, Global Perspectives on Chronic Disease: Prevention & Managementexternal link, will be held in Calgary, Alberta, Nov. 23-26, 2009. Registration and call for abstracts are now open.

First annual Infoway symposium

Canada Health Infoway has announced that its inaugural annual symposiumexternal link on the implementation of Canada's electronic health record systems will be held Nov. 2-5, 2009, in Mississauga, Ont.

Report on guideline for management of kidney cancer

Kidney Cancer Canada has announced the publication of a reportexternal link reviewing a clinical management consensus guideline on the management of kidney cancer. The guideline was developed as a result of the first Canadian Kidney Cancer Forum in 2008 and reviewed in a subsequent forum in January 2009.

NWT offers vaccine against HPV

The Government of the Northwest Territories announced on June 16 that it will offer free vaccines against the human papillomavirus (HPV) to all girls entering Grade 4 in the 2009 school year. A catch-up program will also be offered over the next five years for girls in Grades 9-12.

Work underway in P.E.I. for province-wide model of care

The government of Prince Edward Island announced on June 17 that work has begun on revamping health-care system organization and delivery in the province. The first meeting of the Model of Care Design Team has been held as part of the Integrated Health System Project, which focuses on operational improvements and service realignment. The move to improve the system is the result of the 2008 Corpus Sanchez Health System Review. Detailed planning will take place over the summer for implementation of the redesigned model.
