Momentum 2009: Cancer Control in Action

Momentum Image

At the Partnership’s first stakeholder forum, held in Toronto this past summer, 180 participants discussed the breadth and depth of collaborative work being implemented across Canada’s cancer control strategy.

The varied presentations, delivered in plenary sessions and workshops, illustrated the important strides being made across priority areas.

These include:

  • a ground-breaking population study to better understand and control cancer risk;

  • more consistent screening for the often-overlooked vital signs of pain and distress in cancer patients;

  • new electronic checklists for surgeons to embed guidelines at the point of care;

  • increasing uptake of colorectal cancer screening through a shared national network.

These are just some examples of the progress being made within the cancer control strategy that were presented and discussed at the forum.

Almost 30 presentations, highlighting a range of initiatives currently being implemented through the strategy, are posted online at www.cancerview.ca/momentum2009. As well, a summary report is available providing a top line overview of the workshop discussions.

Evaluations from the forum showed that participants most valued hearing about the range of collaborative work being advanced across the country and the impact achieved in just two years. As well, they enjoyed hearing from opening speaker Graham Sher, CEO of Canadian Blood Services, on effecting pan-Canadian change in our federated health system. More opportunities for discussion and networking were identified as areas for improvement.

We are grateful to our project leads who demonstrated how the work being implemented across the country will help us better control cancer, and we thank all participants for sharing their views. The event identified new opportunities for collaboration on existing initiatives — including new partners for Cancer View Canada and inquiries about the novel Cancer Risk Management tool among others. All of which is helping to provide further momentum for our work together in advancing Canada’s cancer control strategy.

The forum is one step along a continuum of stakeholder engagement. Feedback from the forum will inform this process, and we will be engaging and consulting with stakeholders along the way.
